China hosts the world's largest hydroelectric dam, the Three Gorges Dam, on the Yangtze River, a massive structure built for flood control, power generation, and improved navigation, though it's also known for displacing millions and causing environmental concerns. China also has other huge projects like the Jinping-I Dam (tallest arch dam) and is building the even larger Baihetan and potentially the world's biggest hydropower project on the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra) in Tibet.
Key Dams in China

    Three Gorges Dam:
        Location: Yangtze River, Hubei Province.
Significance: World's largest power station by capacity (22,500 MW), significantly reduces coal reliance, controls Yangtze floods, and aids shipping.
Impact: Displaced over a million people, raised ecological concerns, and even slightly slowed Earth's rotation.
    Jinping-I Dam:
        Location: Sichuan Province.
Significance: World's tallest arch dam (305m).
    Baihetan Dam:
        Location: Jinsha River (Yangtze tributary).
Significance: Second largest power station in China, after Three Gorges.
    Yarlung Tsangpo Project:
Location: Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra) River, Tibet.
Significance: A cascade of five hydropower stations, planned to be the world's largest single source of hydroelectric power, raising geopolitical concerns with India and Bangladesh.

Other Noteworthy Dams

Ankang Dam: On the Han River, Shaanxi Province.
Longtan Dam: The country's highest gravity dam, in Guangxi.
Banqiao Dam: Infamous for its 1975 failure, causing immense loss of life.

China's dams are critical for its energy needs and flood control but come with significant environmental and social trade-offs, especially larger projects on international rivers.
