The most famous man killed in the Beamish area during the 1800s was actually a victim of an unsolved crime in Northumberland rather than Beamish itself, though his cottage was later rebuilt at the museum.
Renowned Georgian quilter Joseph Hedley—known locally as "Joe the Quilter"—was brutally stabbed to death in his cottage in Warden on January 3, 1826. The murder caused a massive national outcry and a government reward was issued, but his killer was never caught.
Because of the historical notoriety of the crime, detailed sketches of his home and records of his life survived. In the 1800s, this level of documentation for an ordinary working man was extremely rare.
As part of the Remaking Beamish project, the Beamish Museum used historical maps, archaeological digs, and period drawings to lovingly recreate his heather-thatched Georgian cottage, allowing visitors to step inside his home.
There are two other notable historical figures with similar names tied to the 1800s who met tragic ends:
  • William Beamish (1760–1828): A prominent Irish businessman and founder of the Beamish & Crawford brewery, who died naturally in 1828.
  • William Beamish (1800s suspect): In 1861, an English man named William Beamish was famously arrested for an arsenic poisoning case, though this case took place in Coventry.
